Ah Mow to train with U.S. team

Robyn Ah Mow, who completed her collegiate volleyball career for the University of Hawaii Wahine last fall, is one of 20 current or past collegiate stars who will train with the USA Women's National Team this spring, head coach Mick Haley said yesterday.

Ah Mow and teammate Joselyn Robins were among the 87 participants who took part in three days of scrimmages at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., this past weekend.

Robins is listed as an alternate.

Ah Mow is part of a group of 10 players who are candidates for the U.S. team that will participate in the World University Games in Sicily, Italy, Aug. 19-31. She also is eligible to enter into the full-time national team training program.

The other group of 10 players will start training for the 2000 Olympics. That group includes former UH player Sarah Chase.

UH WINS SHERIFF MATCHES: The University of Hawaii men's and women's tennis teams defeated Northern Iowa yesterday to win the third annual Stan Sheriff Memorial Challenge at the UH courts.

The Rainbows beat the Panthers, 7-0, improving to 6-4 overall.

The Wahine won, 8-1, to up their season record to 5-7.

Hawaii's Alex Sugai and Natalie Lum and Northern Iowa's Heather Mowery and Chris Yuska earned Most Valuable Player honors.

VULCANS SPLIT: At Hilo, the University of Hawaii at Hilo edged St. Mary's (Texas), 4-3 in nine innings in the second game to earn a split of a women's softball doubleheader at Carvalho Field yesterday.

Melanie Hipwell doubled to start the bottom of the ninth inning for UHH (8-1) and scored the winning run on Kanani Bona's one-out single to right field.

The Rattlers (18-8) won the first game, 6-1.

WAHINE PLAYPOWERHOUSES: The University of Hawaii women's softball team meets No. 1 Arizona. No. 11 Oklahoma State and Ohio State in pool-play games starting tomorrow in the Pony Tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
