








University of Hawaii basketball player Joselyn Robins has been picked by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a 1996 NSCA All-American. UHs Robins gets honor
The award recognizes athletes who have excelled in strength training and conditioning. Selections are also based on community involvement, academic achievement and leadership qualities.
Robins was nominated by UH strength and conditioning coach Curtis Tsuruda.
UH GOLFERS WELL OFF PACE: The University of Hawaii women's golf team was in 10th place, while the men were in 12th after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference championship tournament.
Jarrod Mizusawa had Hawaii's best individual men's score with a 74, good for a tie for 33rd. Linda Appelblad topped the UH women with an 80, tied for 27th.
HILO TIED FOR SECOND: The University of Hawaii at Hilo golf team was tied for second after the first round of the 54-hole NCAA Division II District 8 qualifying at the Big Island's Hapuna Golf Course.
Cal State-San Bernardino led the six-team tournament with a 16-over-par 304. The Vulcans were tied with UC-Davis, one stroke back.
UH-Hilo's Stu Cohen and Ryan Koshi were in fourth place with 75s.
ALOHA STATE GAMES: The registration booklets for the 1997 Aloha State Games, June 6-15, will be available at 7-Elevens island-wide after Thursday.
KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: The USA National Karate-do Federation 1997 Hawaii State Regional Karate Championships will be held Sunday at the Aiea Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The deadline for competitors to enter is Friday at 6 p.m. To enter, call Clarice Hirano at 593-1153.
All-day admission is $3 for adults and children over age 12. Children under age 12 accompanied by a parent are free.
MARINE CORPS SWAMP ROMP: The third annual Swamp Romp, offering mud, sweat and cheers, is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay.
The five-mile run and obstacle course event is open to the public (six-person teams). The entry fees are $72 active duty military, dependents and DoD civilian employee teams; $90 civilian teams.
