WAC honors for
11 Rainbow athletes

Five members of the University of Hawaii women's basketball team were among 11 Rainbow athletes named to the Western Athletic Conference's all-academic teams for winter sports.

Wahine basketball players Michelle Macintrye (4.0, Spanish), BJ Itoman (3.83, exercise science/math), Tiffany Fujimoto (3.68, exercise science), Liisa Kotilainen (3.46, food science/human nutrition) and Kendis Leeburg (3.45, elementary education) were honored.

Eric Ambrozich (3.42, sociology) was the only member of the men's basketball team above the minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA to be considered for selection.

Also honored were three members of the men's swimming and diving team: Lars Jonas Brodin (3.93, political science), Brian Renha (3.38, psychology) and Peter Lindh (3.21, travel industry management).

Two members from the women's swimming and diving team were also named: Meghan Atwood (3.73, history) and Summer Wofford (3.6, journalism).

AZTECS TRIUMPH: At Hilo, San Diego State University won the opener of a three-game, nonconference baseball series with the University of Hawaii at Hilo, 2-0, last night at Francis Wong Stadium.

Justin Brunette and Jody Stevens combined to pitch a three-hitter.

The Aztecs improved to 36-17-1. The Vulcans dropped to 16-29-1.

VULCANS NINTH: At St. Joseph, Mo., the University of Hawaii at Hilo men's golf team was in ninth place entering today's final round of the NCAA Division II Regional.

The Vulcans shot a team aggregate 329 yesterday for a 36-hole total of 647, 40 strokes behind leader Central Oklahoma. Missouri Western is second at 613.

Hawaii-Hilo's Stu Cohen is in a three-way tie for 11th place at 156. Lee Kinney of Cal State San Bernardino is leading with an even-par 144.

KEOLANUI TO CREIGHTON: Melanie Keolanui, a 5-foot-9 hitter from Hilo High School, has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Creighton University.

Keolanui is the first recruit for former University of Hawaii associate head coach Howard Wallace, who took over the Lady Jay program in March. Keolanui is a four-year letter winner in volleyball, softball and track and field, and academically ranks ninth in her class of 357.

HOLTON WINS FOR BENTLEY: At Smithfield, R.I., Maui High School graduate Matt Holton won the 5,000-meter race at last Sunday's Bryant Invitational to help the Bentley College men's team to second place finish in the three-team meet.

Holton was timed in 15 minutes, 55.95 seconds.

TENNIS RATERS WANTED: The Hawaii Pacific Tennis Association needs verifiers to conduct and rate players to determine competition levels for USTA league programs and class tournaments.

Applicants must be current members of the USTA, meet Level 2 Verifier Certification Standards and complete a clinic-workshop this summer. Salary is commensurate with test level achieved.

BENEFIT GOLF: The fifth annual golf tournament benefiting P.A.R.E.N.T.S., a private nonprofit organization which focuses on helping parents learn better parenting and coping skills, will be held May 15 at the Mamala Bay Course, Hickam AFB.

The format is a three-person modified scramble. The maximum handicap is 26 for men and 36 for women with a minimum team handicap of 40.

The cost is $125 per person ($330 per three-person team) and includes a buffet dinner.

KONA CLASSIC SET: The first Kona Classic Fishing tournament, the first leg of a six-part Kona Marlin Tournament Series, will be held May 17-18.

The Kona Classic is not just a marlin tournament. The Classic will pay the same amount of money to the biggest ahi, mahi mahi, ono and aku that it will pay for the largest marlin.

PAAC GOLF CLASSIC: The 43rd International Golf Classic, sponsored by the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, is scheduled for May 16 at Leilehua Course.

The format is best-ball twosome in A, B and C flights. Check-in is at 10 a.m. followed by lunch and a noon shotgun start.

A donation of $150 per player covers green fees, golf cart, lunch, and a one-year PAAC membership. The proceeds will benefit the AAC's high school outreach program.

ADULT SWIMMING CLASSES: The Rainbow Aquatics Masters Swimming program operates year round at the University of Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 6 to 7:15 p.m. and Monday through Thursday from 7:15 to 8:38 p.m.

The adult structured swimming workouts include conditioning and stroke mechanics. Ability levels range from early intermediate through advanced.

SPORTS ACROBATICS: The fifth Junior World Championships of Sports Acrobatics will be held at Klum Gym on the University of Hawaii campus, May 29-31.

Tickets are on sale at the UH Campus Center ticket office.

Sports acrobatics is similar to gymnastics in that the athletes perform exercises involving strength, balance and flight, but their apparatus is a partner and the exercises are choreographed to music.

MAXFLI APPLICATIONS: The Aloha Section, PGA, is accepting registration applications for the 1997 Maxfli Aloha Section, PGA Junior Championship, June 12-13, in Hilo.

Junior golfers can obtain entry forms at local PGA facilities or call (808) 593-2230.

FOUR-FOR-THREE SPECIAL: The Wailea Golf Club is offering a kamaaina special through Dec. 20. The special rate allows Hawaii residents playing as a foursome to pay for just three of the golfers -- $165 plus tax.

Reservations can be made by calling (808) 875-5155 for the Blue Course and (808) 875-7450 for the Gold and Emerald courses.

PRINCE COURSE NO. 1: Golf Digest Magazine voted the Prince Course in Princeville, Kauai, as the best in the state of Hawaii.

Both the Prince and Mauna Kea courses on the Big Island were named among America's 100 greatest golf courses by the magazine. The Prince was ranked No. 66, Mauna Kea 98th.

PAY BY CREDIT CARD: By mid-May the City and County of Honolulu will be accepting credit cards as payment at all municipal golf courses, Honolulu Zoo, Hanauma Bay and Foster Botanical Garden.

VULCANS SIGN THREE: The University of Hawaii at Hilo has signed three athletes for next year's cross-country season.

Jochen Bind, from Marburg, Germany, will run for the Vulcans' men's team. Bind placed 21st in the German National Championships and has the potential to be among the elite runners in NCAA Division II, according to UHH coach Mike McFate.

Signing with the Vulcans' women's team are Andrea Duran and Juila Ornelas, transfers from junior college powerhouse Mount San Antonio. Duran was 19th at this year's national championship meet and Ornelas placed 21st.

WAHINE VOLLEYBALL CAMP: There will be four sessions to UH coach Dave Shoji's Wahine Volleyball Camp -- June 18-21 (grades 7-12), July 14-17 (grades 4-6), Aug. 2-5 (grades 7-12) and Aug. 7-10 (grades 7-12).

The cost is $125 for camps 1, 3 or 4; $100 for camp 2. For more information, a brochure or application, telephone 956-6229.

WAHINE BASKETBALL CAMP: Applications are available for the University of Hawaii Wahine Basketball Camp, June 15-17. Wahine coach Vince Goo heads the staff.

The camp is open to girls, ages 10-18 and boys, ages 10-14. Daily sessions run from 8 a.m. to noon (ages 10-14), and from 1 to 5 p.m. (ages 15-18). The cost is $75, $67.50 for Junior Fan Club members.

MILILANI FUN RUN/WALK: The second Mililani 10-Kilometer Fun Run and 5-Kilometer Walk is set for June beginning at 7 a.m.

All proceeds will go to the Hawaii D.A.R.E. Officer's Association, the Honolulu Police Department's classroom-based drug abuse and resistance education program. The fee is $18 for entries postmarked by May 19, and $22 through race day.

Race packets will be available for pick up on May 30-31 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Castle & Cooke Homes Hawaii Sales Information Center in Mililani. For information, call 539-5720.
