Garber to miss
Wahine opener

Lori Garber, a sophomore middle blocker for the University of Hawaii women's volleyball team, has been diagnosed with mononucleosis and will miss this weekend's Aston's Imua Wahine Volleyball Challenge.

Garber is the second player to be sidelined. Her high school teammate, outside hitter Kelli Cordray is out indefinitely with a lung problem.

The Wahine open the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Illinois State at the Special Events Arena. Hawaii also plays a tournament doubleheader Sunday, against San Francisco at 1 p.m. and against Kansas State at 7 p.m.

The rest of the tournament schedule has Kansas State against Illinois State at noon Friday and Kansas State against San Francisco at 4:30 p.m. Friday. San Francisco plays Illinois State at 5 p.m. Sunday.

SAILING CANOES: At Kawaihae, Big Island, The Boardriders Club of Kauai, captained by Marvin Otsuji, finished first in Division I (six-member crew) of the Mo'ikeha Cup, a race for Hawaiian sailing canoes, Sunday.

Their time in covering the 22-mile course was three hours, 38 minutes and 16 seconds.

PATAO SETS RECORDS: Val Patao of Maui set state records in the snatch (242 pounds), jerk (320 pounds) and total (562 pounds) in the 218-pound class at Saturday's Team Hawaii Weightlifting Meet at the Nuuanu YMCA.

TENNIS DRAW: The draw for the Hale Koa Labor Day Weekend tennis tournament, Saturday and Sunday, will be posted tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT FINALE: The last night in the Wednesday night summer smoker series for all street-legal cars and bikes is tomorrow night at Hawaii Raceway Park starting at 6 p.m.

BIG LEAGUE SOFTBALL: The Hawaii entry in the girls Big League Softball World Series at Kalamazoo, Mich., Aug. 13-15, finished with a 1-4 record. The only victory came against Tennessee, 3-0.
