Herniated disk ends Gouveia's season

Associated Press

San Diego Chargers linebacker Kurt Gouveia is out for the rest of the season, the team said yesterday, citing a herniated disc that he aggravated last Thursday.

Spokesman David Neville said the injury is in Gouveia's neck, and surgery is planned. The Chargers lost Thursday night to Kan-sas City. Gouveia, 33, who played for Waianae High School and Brigham Young University, has played for the Chargers for two seasons. He was picked up as a free agent from the Philadelphia Eagles in 1996. This is his 12th NFL season.

Honolulu wins

The Honolulu Sharks pounded out eight hits and scored six runs in the middle three innings to defeat the Maui Stingrays, 6-2, last night in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Rainbow Stadium.

Larry Barnes had two RBIs for the Sharks and Gabe Kapler had three hits.

The game between the West Oahu CaneFires and Hilo Stars at Francis Wong Stadium in Hilo was postponed by rain. The game will be made up as part of a 5 p.m. doubleheader today.

Main event on at Makaha

The Oxbow World Longboard Championship was to resume today at Makaha, wave conditions permitting, with 72 of the world's best surfers in the main event, all taking aim at the title of world champion.

Two surfers from Hawaii competing today, reigning champion Bonga Perkins and Makaha's Rusty Keaulana, have held the title for the past four years.

The world championship began yesterday under auspicious conditions, with absolutely perfect 4- to 6-foot waves on the first day of the 10-day waiting period.

For the entire day, 32 trialists battled fiercely in the splendid high-performance waves, putting on a clinic that showed how quickly longboard surfing has advanced.

Hawaii's Zane Aikau killed it, deftly mixing radical lip slams and powerhouse cutbacks with traditional noseriding in a judge-pleasing blend.

After a day of dominating displays of surfing agility that provided drama down to the last wave of each heat, eight surfers remained to join the elite 64 surfers seeded into today's start of the main event.

Just as competition ended, the wind turned onshore and spoiled the previously perfect waves. Other trialists joining Aikau in the main event are Mike Mullen, Tellus Fix, Kanoa Dahlin and Joey Valentin, all of Hawaii; Cisco Arana and Rafael Sobral of Brazil, and Hayden Swan of Australia.

Makaha lifeguards Brian Keaulana and Mel Puu were eliminated from the contest, to the dismay of the partisan crowd.

With several wave-producing storms on the horizon, contest directors are content to wait for the best two days to complete the contest.
