UCLA victory puts chip on Rainbows' shoulders
The players on the Hawaii men's volleyball team are so new to each other that they have no history. Not with the Rainbow program and certainly not with UCLA.It took just 91 minutes to change that. A rivalry was born Friday night that doesn't include the 1996 NCAA championship match, the 1996 Outrigger Hotels Volleyball Invitational title match or any of the other 35 meetings with the Bruins over the past 16 years.
Seven of the nine Rainbows who played last night suffered their first collegiate loss. And it came in straight sets, 15-11, 15-6, 15-10, for the title of the Invitational at the Special Events Arena.
That is more than enough to create a rivalry for the newcomers. They're already looking forward to the league rematches with the Bruins here March 20 and 21.
"I hate losing," said sophomore blocker Andre Breuer, who had a match-high 16 kills en route to all-tournament honors. "We can beat UCLA."
Punahou hands St. Louis first loss of season
Punahou handed St. Louis its first loss of the season, 35-30, Friday night as Brandon Brooks and Dean Salter scored 13 points apiece at McCabe Gym.St. Louis and Punahou are now both 2-1.
Punahou nearly lost Brooks when he picked up three fouls within 10 seconds a little more than 2 minutes into the fourth quarter, and had to sit him down.
But the Buffanblu defense, combined with ice-cold perimeter shooting by St. Louis, maintained a 26-22 Punahou lead until Brooks returned to the game with 3 minutes left.
Brooks broke the scoring drought when he drove the baseline with 2 minutes left and scored over Sione Thompson to make it 28-22.
St. Louis cut it to 28-26 in the next 30 seconds but Punahou converted late free throw opportunities to secure the win.
Punahou led, 9-7, after one quarter and 16-13 at the half as Brooks swept the glass.
St. Louis nudged close to Punahou several times in the second half but could not overtake the lead.
