Hawaii’s Viloria and
Rodriguez win in nationals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Brian Viloria of Waipahu and Antonio Rodriguez of Wailuku won their second-round bouts yesterday in the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships.

Viloria stopped Federico Flores of Arizona at 1:35 of the second round of a 106-pound bout and Rodriguez stopped defending 119-pound champion Cornelius Lock of Detroit at 2:04 of the third.

A third Hawaii boxer, Waianae's Cheyenne Padeken, was outpointed by Randy Griffin of Philadelphia, 49-41, at 165 pounds.

SEASIDERS BEAT WAHINE: Vanessa Valansi had 22 kills and Arlete Silva added 17 and seven blocks as the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team defeated the University of Hawaii, 60-51, 67-59, in an exhibition match last night at Klum Gym.

The match featured an experimental scoring format that may be introduced in 1999. It is a best-of-three match with a 14-minute running clock, rally scoring and a two-point play for kills from behind the 10-foot line.

Jessica Sudduth led the Wahine with 22 kills and six blocks, while incoming senior captain Kelli Cordray added 14 kills. The Seasiders hit .214 to the Wahine's .107.

Hawaii continues its spring season with a 1 p.m. exhibition match against Nebraska at the Stan Sheriff Center March 28.

NO. 7 BEST-EVER FOR UH SOFTBALL: The University of Hawaii softball team began a two-week road trip today with the No. 7 ranking -- its highest ever -- in the latest USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.

The Rainbow Wahine (28-3) moved up four spots from No. 11. Their previous high was No. 8 during the 1994 season.

They've won 10 in a row -- a loss to Tokyo College in last weekend's Bank of Hawaii Invitational didn't count on their record -- going into tonight's game against Kansas in the Capital Classic at Sacramento, Calif. After that tourney, they'll visit Santa Clara, St. Mary's and nationally fifth-ranked Fresno State.

WAHINE BANQUET: The University of Hawaii women's basketball team will be honored at a banquet April 4 at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel.

Banquet tickets cost $35 for adults, $15 for children (4-12 years old). RSVP should be made by March 23. Checks made payable to Louis K. Wai should be mailed to: UH Wahine Basketball, 1337 Lower Campus Road, Honolulu, HI 96822.

No host cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:15 p.m.
