


The University of Hawaii baseball team has shored up its middle infield with the signing of shortstop Corey Miller, bringing the number of signees to 11. UH's signing of

new face to teamMiller, who also pitches, is expected to compete with Rory Pico at short, with Michael Dartt likely moving to second base.
The 22-year-old Miller, from Oakhurst, Calif., comes to the Rainbows from Fresno City College, where he redshirted last season while making the Dean's List in academics. He began his college career with Nebraska in 1996 and played for Westmont in 1997 before transferring to Fresno City College.
He batted .330 for Westmont and also had a 5-6 pitching record with one save and a 2.67 earned run average. At Nebraska, he batted .256 and was 2-1 on the mound.
HO ADVANCES: At Puerto Escondido, Mexico, Hawaii's Derek Ho survived a pounding in waves up to 10 feet to advance to today's quarterfinals of the Oxbow World Masters Championship.
Ho won his heat for the third consecutive day and is one of four over-40 division surfers to advance. Also earning a spot in the quarterfinals was Hawaii's Buzzy Kerbox.
BIG LEAGUERS LOSE: At Sacramento, Calif., Hawaii was shut out, 6-0, by Conejo Valley, Calif., in the championship game of the Little League Big League Baseball Western Regional yesterday.
Conejo Valley, which handed Hawaii a loss earlier in the tournament, connected for 10 hits. The California team advances to the Big League World Series in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
TOMORI FALLS SHORT: Christel Tomori of Kailua failed to gain a match-play berth in the U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championship after shooting a 6-over-par 78 yesterday for a 157 total in qualifying at Ann Arbor, Mich.
KOP IN U.S. SENIOR AMATEUR: Wendell Kop's 1-over-par 73 at Kapolei yesterday earned him a spot in the U.S. Senior Amateur Golf Championship, to be played at Glencoe, Ill., Sept. 12-17.
Art Fujita (74), Ronald Kimura (74), Hiroshi Miyamoto (75) and Clarence Shimoko (78) are Hawaii alternates.
FIVE QUALIFY FOR HERSHEY: Five young athletes from Hawaii have been chosen for the Pacific Southwest Regional team that will compete in the annual Hershey (Pa.) National Youth Track and Field Meet this Saturday.
Named to the team were: Charles Brown, 11-12 boys, 200-meter dash; A.J. Clark, 9-10 boys, 100-meter dash; Justin Dore, 13-14 boys, 200-meter dash; Clarice Kent, 11-12 girls, 100-meter dash, and Healani Leite-AhYo, 11-12 girls, 200-meter dash.
The selection was based on performances in age-group events at the state meet July at Kaiser High. The region includes Hawaii, California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona.
TWO FAB 50 PICKS: Dylan Fern of Punahou School and Waimea High's Michael Karratti have been named to Volleyball magazine's Fab 50 high school boys' all-star team.
Fern, a 6-foot setter, has committed to UC Santa Barbara. Karratti, a 6-2 hitter, will play for the University of Hawaii.
COSTELLO DECATHLON WINNER: At Neosho, Mo., Vince Costello of the Hawaii Masters Track Club won the decathlon in the 45-49 age-group at the recent National Masters Championships.
Costello scored a personal best of 6,574 points to beat defending champion Alan Russell by seven points.
THREE GOLDS IN TRACK: At Orono, Maine, Hawaii's Hank Warrington won two events and Lionel Low one in the recent USATF Outdoor Masters Championship.
Warrington, competing in the 30-34 age group, won the 100- and 200-meter races. Low won the triple jump in the 55-59 age group.
Ron Pate was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for 50-54 year-olds. Also competing from Hawaii was Bob Gill.
JUDOKAS GOLDEN: Seven judokas representing Shobukan Judo Club won gold medals at two recent U.S. National Judo Junior Olympic competitions on the mainland.
Hawaii gold medalists at the USJI Junior Olympics in Johnstown, Pa., were: Jason Spike, 7; Daniel Chow, 8; Brandon Low, 10; Jonathan Spiker, 13; Melissa Orden, 13; and Taylor Tanaka, 16. The six, as well as six-year-old Jared Spiker also won gold medals at the USJA Junior Olympics in Toledo, Ohio.
