Supposed to be on vacation this week, so I’m going to keep this short.
If you missed Jason Mraz last Friday at the Waikiki Shell, I’ve got more pictures and video highlights from the concert after the jump. It was a fun night, with Mraz mixing hits with new material and a couple of interesting covers (Elton John and Bob Marley!?!?) for good measure.
Oh, and I kinda called it… “I’m Yours” was Mraz’s final song, before the encore. I thought it would be the encore.
But you had to love that Mraz used what appeared to be a baritone ukulele (with two G-strings, I think) throughout the night. This guy could probably do a guest set at KCCN’s “Birthday Bash” and kill it with his crossover appeal.
If you’re a fan of reggae music, tonight’s two-year anniversary party for “Redda Fire” is a can’t miss event.
Earlier this week, I had a chance to talk story with Jahson the 45 Revolver. Check out the video above for more about the weekly party and Jahson’s plans for the future.
Hate all you want, but I still use that site to keep up with my friends, as well as local promoters and other movers-and-shakers in Clubland. And this week, MySpace tipped me off to the fact that comedian Bobby Lee (pictured) will return to Honolulu this week.
Lee is the featured act for MySpace’s “Secret Stand-Up” promotion, where comics are invited to perform and no tickets are sold. The only way to get in is to bring a printout of your MySpace profile with the “Secret Stand-Up” profile in your top friends.
He’ll perform Thursday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii’s Manoa Grand Ballroom; doors open 7 p.m. with showtime scheduled for 8 p.m. Seating is first-come-first-serve, so get there early. 18-and-over welcome.
Over in Waikiki, two new establishments are pretty much guaranteed to draw good crowds over the next few weeks.
Coconut Willy’s at Waikiki Beach Walk finally opened this week after a few months of delays, and management isn’t wasting any time getting the entertainment schedule off the ground.
Kutmaster Spaz has been hired as resident DJ and will spin from midnight to 4 a.m. nightly, with live music by Dynasty (Kevin Mau, Tito Berinobis and George Cristobal) on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to midnight and Taja on Sundays from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Just down the street at the Royal Hawaiian Center, PF Chang’s Waikiki will hold a grand opening fundraiser on April 24 to benefit the Waikiki Community Center. Tickets are $75 and include a “full dining experience with signature dishes customized for each table.”
Reservations for parties up to six people will be accepted until April 21; call 457-1859.
It was packed during Saturday’s “Jammin’ Hawaiians” at the Waikiki Shell.
According to promoters Mass Appeal Entertainment and Musical Youth of Hawaii, a sold-out crowd of 8,000 saw Fiji share the stage with J Boog, Laga Savea and Big Every Time’s Papa T, while Jamaican artist Lukie D nearly stole the show with a set that brought him up close and personal with the Shell crowd.
I’ve got more than 30 pictures from the concert after the jump; check out my previous post for video.
