Cocktails, MORE Cocktails and Beauty Queens

Can you tell where the above picture was taken? I took that shot at the start of my weekend… on Wednesday.
Figure it out yet?
I know, I know. It’s not hard. There’s only one pink hotel on Oahu, and it’s in Waikiki.
That’s right, I was at the Sheraton Waikiki for “The Listening Room” at the Hanohano Room. Got that shot of the Royal Hawaiian from the parking garage while waiting for an elevator.
This is the second try for the weekly, after a slow start a few months back. Promoters Flash Hansen and Matty Boy Hazelgrove regrouped, moved the start time to 6 p.m. and recruited the talented DeShannon Higa to provide a pau hana soundtrack.
Throw in free parking (including valet!) and no cover charge, and it’s easy to recognize the potential for greatness here.
I ran into the one and only SuperCW on the way up, and we quickly found Flash in the lounge area reserved for walk-in customers (the Hanohano Room still offers regular dinner service as well):
Richard Cheese and DJ Mei-Lwun are regular visitors to Hawaii, and both happened to be in town last Wednesday night.
See that arm reaching for the $5 bottle of water on the table? That’s Mei-Lwun’s wife, back here with hubby for the first time since their recent honeymoon in the islands.
While food and drink aren’t free like parking and cover, there are $5 martini specials and a half-price pupu menu available.
Offerings include Prime Rib Poke, Crispy Ginger Chicken and Tiger Prawn Ceviche, all priced at $6. Flash recommended the prawns, but we opted for a plate of chicken.
I almost forgot to get a picture, but managed to snap this one before grinding the last pieces myself:
I can also recommend the Very Very Berrytini (made with Svedka vodka) the Pink G (with Malibu rum) and the Nuts and Berries (with macadamia nut liqueur, among other things).
All just $5, and all very tasty, although the pink and red hues can seem a little too feminine for someone used to ordering Jack and Cokes.
But hey, I can get down with it, as SuperCW so eloquently captured with her camera:
Afterward, I headed for Ala Moana and the “Lost” viewing party at Jackie’s Kitchen.
It got real quiet in there once the show started. People were focused!
Last stop last Wednesday was Chinatown for Andy Rourke at NextDoor.
One of the good things about “Acid Wash Wednesdays” is that Lacy Matsumoto is at the front door. Don’t know Lacy? If you’ve ever hung out at NextDoor, then you know her work.
Besides, she just put the finishing touches on the new SMARTbar in the club. Now you can order a healthy (?!?!) cocktail, a non-alcoholic smoothie, or even a glass of coconut juice!
Andy Rourke was okay, I guess. I enjoyed DJ Vegas Mike’s set more.
But he had people dancing most of the night, so whatever. Fun end to the evening.
As for the rest of the weekend, the highlight had to be spending the afternoon at Aloha Tower Marketplace on Saturday to help judge the 2007 Miss Aloha Tower Pageant.
I had a blast hanging out with former Miss Hawaii Jennifer Hera Pimentel, and the poise some of these young ladies possess at such a young age is amazing.
I’ll have more about the winners in tomorrow’s “In the Mix.”
