Seven years after blowing up with the song “Couldn’t Take the Mana,” Mana Kaleilani Caceres is back with a new album, “I Be Hawaiian.”
He’ll play at Chez’s Bar and Grill (formerly known as Chez Monique) in Aiea on Saturday night in what’s billed as the second stop of his “CD Release Concert Series.”
Doors open at 9 p.m.
Caceres remains one of Hawaii’s more conscious artists, sharing his mana’o on topics including Hawaiian sovereignty, the state’s crystal meth problem and the sketchiness of some in the music business.
At the same time, he includes tracks on “I Be Hawaiian” that focus on the lighter side of life.
“Kuuipo” was written for his wife, Kalehua, while Caceres penned “The Road” for his mother in remembrance of her late husband (and his father). “Skankin’ in da Bedroom” and “Moemoea Woman” are also worth a listen.
Besides Saturday at Chez’s, you can catch Caceres at Aloha Stadium during the 50th State Fair on May 26, June 3 and June 9. Cambell High School students will also get to see him perform during their graduation ceremonies on June 6.
Here’s a sample track from his new album, called “Be Alright”:
