More weekend picks

Just returned from UH-Manoa… if you haven’t listened to KTUH lately, Fridays are probably one of the best days (and nights) to do so.
It all starts at noon with Davey Shindig and Molly Firecracker hosting “Party Shuffle” until 3 p.m. They’re followed by longtime KTUH DJ Loriel and his weekly “Friday Afternoon Bashment,” with G-Spot’s “Underground Sounds” taking over from 6 to 9 p.m. and Jake “The Snake” Miyasato’s “The Mix Down” from 9 p.m. to midnight.
As they like to preach to anyone who will listen, KTUH is Hawaii’s “only alternative” to traditional commercial radio. While there is some really bad programming by students who have no business being on the air, Fridays are an example of how college kids can get it right.
Back to the weekend: Rock fans are in luck, as the band formerly known as the Hellbound Hounds are back in town for a short tour.
The Hardest Hearts played the weekly “Soundclash” party at Lotus Soundbar last night, with shows at Boardriders in Kailua and Anna Bannana’s back in town planned for tonight and tomorrow night, respectively.
After a few more Oahu gigs next week, the Hardest Hearts finish up with a Maui show next Friday. Click on the flier for a bigger version.
Also coming up this weekend is an all-ages show at the ARTS at Marks Garage. Local promoter Jason Miller’s 808shows.com presents an exclusive show by Mike Park from Skankin’ Pickle, with the Tantra Monsters’ Warren Young also on the bill.
Not enough talent to get you off the couch? How’s about an acoustic set from the Golfcart Rebellion and Black Square to go along with Park and Young?
Doors open at 6 p.m. tomorrow; cover is $5. My advice? Check this one out, then head over to thirtyninehotel for Maria Remos’ going-away party.
And don’t forget about Monday being a holiday – that means even more parties planned for those of us who don’t have to work on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Over at the Living Room, Furious Styles Productions and the Vertical Junkies present “Hawaii Five-O: The Party Where Everybody Gets Lei’d.” Doors open at 10 p.m. for the 21-and-over crowd (sorry VJ’s barely legals!), with all drinks priced at just $3 until 1 a.m.
Even better, there’s no dress code in effect, and everyone who wears “cheesy aloha attire” will enjoy VIP line access and a $5 cover charge. DJs Delve, Durtie Rice and Compose will spin a mix of old school jams and current hits all the way until 4 a.m.
Out on the Leeward side, Lily Koi Restaurant and Lounge presents “The Hip-Hop Fashion Show” on Sunday. Doors open at 9:30 p.m.
Ideliver Entertainment and Visual X co-host the party, with DJ Ill Phil on the decks and a $10 cover before 11 p.m. Local retailers Demo and Ideliver Stylez will present a fashion show at some point during the evening.
And it’s not really a party, but Sunday also brings the first benefit car wash hosted by the Honolulu Derby Girls. If you’re a fan of roller derby, head down to Anna Bannana’s from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday to get your car washed and support the ladies.
