Wednesday Update: Nas, The Listening Party and The Varsity

No daily picks, but I do have a few juicy tidbits you’ll want to read:
THE PHRASE “almost 100 percent certain” really means “don’t get your hopes up.”
That previously announced Nas concert at Pipeline Cafe next month isn’t going to happen. No explanation from the promoter or the venue, other than saying the show is “postponed” and not canceled.
Talib Kweli is scheduled to take Nas’ place at Pipeline on Oct. 27.
Whatever …
TONIGHT IS your last chance to do pau hana with Flash Hansen and Matty Hazelgrove at the Hanohano Room.
The Newjass Quartet is the featured entertainment at “The Listening Party,” which launched in January and enabled a younger, more local crowd to enjoy the sunset hour at the posh restaurant.
While the happy hour pupu specials still leave something to be desired (hopefully the recent addition of a new executive chef at the Hanohano Room will help), you couldn’t go wrong with no cover and free valet parking in addition to a respectable list of $5 martini specials.
But things change. Those martinis will set you back $6 now.
And after this week, Flash and Matty won’t be there to ensure you’re having a fabulous time. The duo will now focus on their new Thursday weekly at Senor Frog’s with the Vertical Junkies in addition to a Friday weekly on Kauai and the bi-weekly “SKYLiNE” party.
Get there by 6 p.m. to enjoy the live music and stunning sunset views …
IT LOOKS like the bar formerly known as Magoo’s is open for business once again.
But what’s really interesting is the name they’ve chosen to use.
The Varsity was the name that Laugh Factory Hawaii’s Jon Schneider used when we talked about his plans to re-open the Varsity Theater as a comedy club/sports bar/performance space in October.
Now Schneider tells me the opening has been delayed until November, but won’t say anything else about it.
And Magoo’s reopens as the Varsity.
Hmm.
I’m hoping to stop by for a drink either tonight or tomorrow. More details (and pictures!) once I get down there …
