DISTINGUISHED COMPANY: Seven recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross, the country's second-highest medal for valor, were inducted yesterday into the Gallery of Heroes at the U.S. Army Museum at Fort DeRussy in Waikiki. Eric Iida, front, and his son, Danny, attended the ceremony for Iida's father, Staff Sgt. George S. Iida, a medal recipient who was among those honored with a gallery plaque.
BASE HIT: Tracy Williams hit a line drive up the middle at yesterday's Makule League game at Ala Wai Field. "Makule" is Hawaiian for older men.
SURROUNDED BY COLOR IN KAILUA: Dahlia Tabori, 3, and her brother Noah, 6, jousted with their paper fans at yesterday's "I Love Kailua" town party. Their father, Dan, was purchasing an item from the Creative Treasures Hawaii booth. The 17th annual street fair featured food booths, craft vendors, artists, plants for sale and entertainment. Event planner Amy Hammond estimated that 5,000 people attended the benefit for Lani-Kailua Outdoor Circle beautification projects.
MAKING A SPLASH WITH FLASH: The 34th Annual Spring New Products Show features local products, gadgets, entertainment, fashion and more this weekend at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Bob DePalma demonstrated the Ultimate Hose Nozzle to the delight of 4-year-old Brenden Locquiao yesterday. Locquaio's grandmother, Cynthia Yamachika, stood next to him. The event continues today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
CLEANUP TAKES OVER CHINATOWN: Mayor Mufi Hannemann thanked participants yesterday at "Taking Back the Streets," a Chinatown cleanup campaign. A rally held between Smith-Beretania Park and River Street was part of Operation Chinatown Alert, a city program.
Whitney White, owner of Interquest Detection Canines of Hawaii, visited Roosevelt High School yesterday with her golden retriever, Custer, to demonstrate the dog's ability to sniff out contraband. Custer could detect alcohol in one backpack. Roosevelt Principal Ann Mahi said she hopes to have regular visits from the dog to check common areas, but not lockers, as early as next month. A private donor has offered to pay for a year-long contract.
Earth Day events around Oahu yesterday included the third-annual Sustainability Festival at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, where Norman Wang, left, rode a "tall bike" advocating greener forms of transportation. Wang is a member of Cycle Manoa, the on-campus bike club.
Also at UH, Suzanne Frazer of the Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawaii -- or B.E.A.C.H. -- showed off a colorful collection of bottle caps that can be collected and recycled, protecting marine and bird life.
IF IT'S TUESDAY, IT MUST BE BEACH DAY: The Corrie family crossed Paki Avenue yesterday, headed into Waikiki for an afternoon surf session together. Andrew Corrie, right, wife Lani and children Kailee, Kiana, Thomas and Francisco regularly surf together on Tuesday afternoons.
HULA WITH A MODERN FLAIR: Na Hula o Kaohikukapulani danced yesterday during the hula auana portion of the Merrie Monarch Festival competition under the direction of kumu Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza (Hanapepe, Kauai). The event is being held at the Edith Kanakaole Tennis Stadium in Hilo. See tomorrow's Today section for more photos and a complete wrap-up of the competition.
MOVING TO 1 BEAT: Aska Hirabe and other members of the UH Tahitian Ensemble performed yesterday during the East-West Fest 2009, held on the Jefferson Hall Lanai on the University of Hawaii-Manoa campus. The free event was themed "Many Cultures, One World" and included cultural booths representing 13 countries.
DEADLINE DELIVERY: Andrei Puchert managed to keep a smile on his face last night as he dropped off his tax forms at a mailbox near the downtown Honolulu post office. The U.S. Postal Service extended pickup hours until midnight to accommodate last-minute filers on tax-deadline day.
LOUD AND PROUD:A peacock spread its tail feathers in a colorful display yesterday at the Honolulu Zoo. The bird's shrill call made it a noisy display as well.
EASTER MORNING SERENITY: Doug Tom, left, daughter Sachi, 11, and wife Audrey paused to admire the sunrise yesterday during the 108th annual Easter Sunrise Service held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

SCRAMBLING FOR EASTER EGGS: Kids collected plastic Easter eggs yesterday at Koko Head District Park during "Easter Eggstravaganza," an event sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation for children up to 12 years old.
EASTER BUNNY ART: Maile Ogata, 9, smiled yesterday while viewing an Easter bunny that was painted on her cheek by Rosie Ramiro during the Malie's Dream "Celebration of Differences" Awareness Fair held at Washington Intermediate School. Maile was born with a rare congenital condition that affects physical and developmental growth. The event is a fundraiser for Easter Seals of Hawaii.
THAIS MARK THEIR NEW YEAR AT FESTIVAL: The Thai Songkran Festival celebrating the Thai New Year was held yesterday at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand. Rungarun Hubble watched as her son, Charles, made an offering to Buddha and the monks. The event featured music, dancing and food.
