The University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources’ Oahu Cooperative Extension Office and Office of Academic and Student Affairs hosted the 2009 Oahu Agriculture and Environmental Awareness Day yesterday at the Urban Garden Center in Pearl City. More than 500 students from Barbers Point, Iroquois Point, Keoneula, Aiea, Pearlridge, Pohakea and Maemae elementary schools attended the event, with a twofold aim: to create a greater awareness and understanding of agriculture and the environment and to introduce students to career opportunities in agriculture and environmental studies throughout the state. Fifth-graders from Pearl Ridge Elementary School enjoyed apples that all the students were given for a snack. Conor Tanaka, left, Taira Shibata, Kawika Fuellas, Toshiro Yanai and Isaac Cabreros were also given an energy bar and drink.
Iroquois Point Elementary School fifth-grader Christopher Townsend made a face as he pulled out actual DNA from peas extracted in a demonstration put on by the Hawaii Crop Improvement Association.
