Kim Soo Paek reacted adversely to the result of her spin at the city Department of Transportation Services giveaway wheel. Working the booth was Kiyomi Oyama, who was giving away free items such as bags, key chains, pedestrian blinking lights and brochures on how to cross streets safely.
Retired Honolulu police officer Gary Yuen demonstrated pottery throwing at the Prime Time 15th annual Wellness Fair, held Wednesday at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Yuen has been making pottery for eight years and said, "For me it's really, really relaxing." Yuen was promoting the city Department of Parks and Recreation Makua Alii Senior Center, which offers classes such as ballroom dancing, ikebana, sumie and pottery to adults and seniors for free or a nominal fee. The center, at 1541 Kalakaua Ave., is open Monday through Friday. Call 973-7258 for information.
Elaine Yakabu had her blood pressure checked at the City & County Emergency Medical Services booth. The EMS were at the fair to help educate attendees on the services that they provide and how to make a 911 call properly.
The Hawaii Pacific University Cheer and Dance teams held a nationals preview Sunday afternoon at the Waikiki Shell. The teams showcased their athleticism, team spirit and creativity in a show that lasted more than an hour, with guest performances by Cheer 808. HPU will be heading next month to the National Cheerleaders Association and National Dance Association Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. HPU's Natalie Willis, at left, kept smiling while flying through the air at Sunday's show. The HPU Large Co-ed Cheer Team will be competing for its seventh consecutive national title when it travels to Florida. The Small Co-ed squad will be going for its fourth straight national crown. The HPU dance team also will be vying to win its fourth consecutive national title. HPU is to hold tryouts April 18-19 at the Moanalua High School gym.
