Kualoa run to raise awareness of ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a devastating neurodegenerative disease, has plagued longtime runner and triathlete Vi Jones-Medusky since 2004, but she continues to fight back.

The public is invited to join her in an off-road adventure at Kualoa Ranch on Oct. 18 to raise awareness about ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The progressive illness destroys nerve cells controlling muscles, and ultimately paralyzes voluntary movement.

Jones-Medusky has run marathons in Honolulu, Boston, New York, Portland, Los Angeles and Maui. She's also completed five ultra-marathons (usually over 50 miles), and three Ironman triathlons. For this event, she'll traverse the four-mile course through Kaaawa Valley in her wheelchair.

For those who apply first, the $18 entry fee includes a T-shirt with artwork by Peggy Chun -- also living with ALS. Supply is limited, though, so latecomers might miss out. But everyone can partake in the camaraderie and fun.

Download an application at www.hurthawaii.com. Registration starts at 7:18 a.m.; the event starts at 8:18 a.m.
