Gershwin's got rhythm of post-Halloween fete
The Hot Club of Hulaville puts on a post-Halloween concert Saturday night at Saint Louis School's Mamiya Theatre.Playing to a show theme of "An American in Paris: A Tribute to George Gershwin," the band's "le hot jazz" will be augmented by guests such as singer Ginai and trumpeter DeShannon Higa.
The band consists of violinist Duane Padilla, guitarist Sonny Silva, pianist and accordion player Pierre Grill and bassist David Chiorini.
Tickets are $30.
For those interested in a little preconcert social, Cafe Che Pasta will offer a selection of fine wine and amuse-bouche. The event starts at 7 and costs $15.

Sweet Adelines singers fill convention center
The islands will beckon more than 8,000 female singers to the Hawaii Convention Center for the 62nd annual convention and competition of the Sweet Adelines International.Starting Tuesday, the women will display their chops at the distinctive art form of four-part harmony, barbershop style. More than 30 choruses and 50 quartets will take part in the performances and competition, which continue through Nov. 8.
A mass sing at 11:15 a.m. Nov. 7 will draw thousands of singers together for a free concert. All competition sessions and an 8 p.m. Tuesday showcase are open to the public, with tickets going for $40 to $45 for the sessions and $25 or $35 for the showcase. Kaimuki presents community celebration
The latest community celebration takes place in Kaimuki on Saturday during the second annual Celebrate Kaimuki Kanikapila.The event, running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kaimuki Community Park on Waialae Avenue (between Koko Head and 11th avenues), will feature more than 130 crafters and showcase the neighborhood's blend of boutiques, restaurants and old-town charm. Two entertainment stages will feature such talent as Jeff Rasmussen and Greg and Junko MacDonald.
Money raised will go to scholarships for area high-school seniors.
Besides the regular paid parking lots on 12th Avenue and Wilhemina Rise, limited free parking will be available at Liliuokalani Elementary School and Sacred Hearts Academy.

Poetry slam seeks isles' best for nationals
The HawaiiSlam spoken-word season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays at the Hawaiian Hut, fronting the Ala Moana Hotel.On Nov. 6, the competition's top two poets will qualify for the Hawaii Slam Finals in April 2009. That contest in turn will determine the team to represent Hawaii at the 2009 National Poetry Slam in Florida.
Special guests are artists participating in the upcoming 5th Annual GiRL FeST Hawaii, including sets by actress Amber Tamblyn ("Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants"), Issil Park, Ali Wong, Mindy Nettifee and Red Summer.
Doors open at 7:45 p.m.; the show starts at 8:30. Admission is $3 before 8:30 and $5 after. Call 387-9664 or visit www.hawaiislam.com.
