After less than a year in business, local all-ages music venue The Spot closed its doors for good last weekend.
"I decided to pull the plug," said owner Blane Nishizawa. "After doing it for six months and watching how the scene was evolving, (I could tell) a lot of things were going to fall apart during the summer."
Nishizawa said the departure of Amberlin Rose from Hawaii and a planned tour by All Heart will decimate the hardcore scene in Honolulu. And while crowds of 75 to 100 people each weekend was nice, it wasn't enough to turn a profit.
"The whole reason I've been doing it is because I really enjoy supporting our local scene," he said. "These kids (have gotten) opportunities that I didn't have when I first started playing."
Last Saturday's final show featured performances by Arkeo, Maybe the Last, Sigma and Above Reproach; Nishizawa's band, Hometown Heroes, also played a set. After taking a few weeks off, Nishizawa plans to get back into playing and possibly returning to promoting shows.
"I'm gonna start doing stuff again in August," he said. "I did 'Hardcore Fest' at Anna's last year and all the kids are asking me to do it again" ...
AFTER FAILING to win in 2008 as Miss Honolulu, former University of Hawaii volleyball player Raeceen Woolford returned this year as Miss Ko Olina in another bid to capture the Miss Hawaii crown.
This time, she was successful -- Woolford will travel to Las Vegas in January as Hawaii's representative at the annual Miss America competition. She also won a number of prizes, among them a systemwide pass on Hawaiian Airlines, jewelry from JYL Jewelry and Flora Lu Designs, professional services from Salon 808, Bessinger Dermatology and Sun Splash Tans and a complete wardrobe from more than a half-dozen local designers.
It was pretty amazing to watch 30 talented young women chasing their dreams in this year's competition; congrats also to runners-up Jalee Kate Fuselier, Lauren Cheape, Tioni Tam Sing and Crystal Lee ...
NEWS AND NOTES: Just weeks after SoHo Mixed Media Bar opened its doors, another watering hole is getting ready to serve drinks in Chinatown. Sources report signage for The Manifest has gone up on Hotel Street, and the Honolulu Liquor Commission approved a dispenser general license (which allows for live music and/or recorded music and dancing) last week ... Mixed martial artists Jason "Mayhem" Miller, Clay Guida and Kendall Grove were spotted at LEVEL4 Nightclub during UPROAR Magazine's one-year anniversary party last Saturday. I'm told Miller snubbed local singer Anuhea Jenkins at some point during the evening, but the two made amends less than 24 hours later. Jenkins said to "blame it on the alcohol" like Jamie Foxx and T-Pain ... Augie Tulba has announced additional dates for his 2009 "Summer Comedy Series." He'll perform July 15 at the Maui Beach Hotel, followed by gigs on July 23 at Sam Choy's and July 29 at Hilo's Water & Ice Lounge. He'll finish the month at Sansei Waikoloa on July 30 ...

The ladies of Downtowne return to Chinatown tonight for "Wears Your Plaid," a plaid-themed party with DJs Kuulei and Jimmy Taco and a special guest performance by Paisley from Tempo Valley.
