If all things come together the right way, the Jump Offs' opening for MGMT next week should be an eye-opener for local indie-rock fans.

Led by Landon Tom, the band has already created a buzz with shows in Chinatown. The band's moniker comes from a variant of "that's cool."

"My friend used to say when something was cool or hype, 'Oh, that's the jump off,'" said Tom.

Along with lead guitarist Oliver Boe, keyboardist Chris Gima, bassist Luke Aguinaldo and drummer Bob Deeter, the Jump Offs have put together a strong and still-building repertoire of songs filled with imaginative arrangements, rhythmic heft and, just as important, a great rock attitude fostered by Tom's brief jaunt in New York City. They won the opening slot for MGMT during a competition last month at LOFT Gallery & Lounge that was judged by the members of another visiting band, All Time Low.

When asked whether they could label their music, Tom said it's contemporary indie rock with pop and garage influences. Some of the similar influences shared by the band include the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Clash, Nirvana, Oasis, the Strokes and, of course, MGMT.

"We're all over the place," he added.

The Jump Offs currently have three songs on their MySpace page, all done before Aguinaldo joined the band. They hope a proper album they've been recording at Pearl City's Exclusive Music Studios will be out in "September-ish."

"It's all about taking the little steps," Tom said. "We're a totally self-funded band."
