PET OHANA

Pet separation anxiety common, treatable

POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Nov 03, 2009

Question: How can I help my dog with separation anxiety?

Answer: Separation anxiety is common and treatable. Enter and leave home without coddling or any kind of an emotional departure or arrival. Reward your dog when you leave by leaving him a treat and toys to keep him busy. Rubber Kong toys can be filled with a dollop of peanut butter, or a puzzle toy will keep him occupied. Leave the radio or television on for stimulation. Ensure he gets plenty of exercise before your departure. Always reward relaxed behavior. And make sure he gets plenty of socialization and time with others to minimize his dependency on one family member.

We're also happy to include the human companion's name, but that's optional. Your pet's photo will be published on starbulletin.com for all your friends and family to see.
