Hoshide, a 7-acre farm in Honaunau at the 1,700-foot elevation, is between a forest reserve and a bee farm, which owner Debbie Hoshide said provides "a perfect combination of oxygenation and pollination."
Judges gave her coffee high marks for fragrance, and noted that its flavor was "both sweet and tart."
Second place went to Kuaiwi Farm/Kona Old Style in Kealakekua; third place to Kona Rainforest Coffee located south of Captain Cook.
The blind tasting, held at Keauhou Beach Resort last week, drew 56 entries, each farm submitting a 50-pound sample from which five pounds were drawn for the competition. They were judged both green and roasted, on fragrance, aroma, taste, nose, aftertaste and body.
