Volunteer Eric Blau stocked canned goods yesterday at the Angel Network pantry at 5339 Kalanianaole Highway in the Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church. The program offers free groceries to those in need on Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The food pantry served 1,500 individuals last month, according to the site's head of operations, Rodney "Mac" Macalino.
The lines of people waiting each week for a bag of grocery staples at island food pantries have doubled in the past year. But the volume of donations to more than 200 nonprofit outreach agencies has not increased to meet the demand because donors are also feeling the pinch of the economic downturn.
