Police say Hilo man tried to stash silver

Police in Oregon arrested a Hilo man who they say was trying to bury 1,200 pounds of stolen silver in a national forest.
Authorities charged Dakotah Yarborough, 43, and his wife, Connie, 38, also of Hilo, on Friday for allegedly stealing $2 million in gold, silver, jewelry and coins from his former stepmother in Bend, Ore.
Police in Bend announced the arrests and charges after a two-week multiagency investigation of Dakotah and Connie Yarborough that also involved Big Island police.
Police arrested Dakotah Yarborough on Sept. 19 with 1,200 pounds of silver in a rented car. Police said he was going to bury the silver on national forest land on the west side of Bend.
Police said they also searched a safe belonging to Yarborough and found a machine gun with a silencer.
Dakotah Yarborough was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree aggravated theft and possession of a machine gun and silencer. He is being held at the Deschutes County Jail in lieu of $522,500 bail and is scheduled to appear tomorrow in court.
Bend police worked with detectives in Redwood City, Calif., to locate Connie Yarborough on Wednesday.
She was charged with first-degree aggravated theft after she was allegedly found with some of the stolen property and is being held at the San Mateo County Women's Jail without bail. She is scheduled for an extradition hearing on Oct. 9.
The investigation involved officers from the Redmond Police Department, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Oregon Department of Justice, Oregon State Police, Salem Police Department, Redwood City Police Department and Hawaii County Police Department.
