Daylight savings ends Sunday

Standard time returns this weekend, so most mainland residents will be setting their clocks back an hour Saturday night.

But residents of Hawaii, Arizona, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands won't get that extra hour of sleep ... or extra hour of work in the case of those working overnight shifts. It also means some mainland residents will forget to change their clocks, and will show up an hour early for church or other events on Sunday.

The change means the time difference to the West Coast will be two hours. The East Coast will be five hours.

 

Deer-hunt applications available

Application forms are now available at all state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife offices for participation in the 2009 Lanai axis deer hunting season.

The deadline for submitting applications is 4 p.m. Dec. 5. Due to a recent court ruling, application and tag fees for this year's deer hunting season have been waived. Instructions will be distributed with receipt of applications.

The department is encouraging hunters to submit applications well before the deadline to ensure proper processing. Applications for all hunts may be submitted in person or mailed to the Maui Division of Forestry and Wildlife Office, 54 S. High St., Room 101, Wailuku, HI 96793.

Lanai residents should mail or deliver their applications to the Lanai Division of Forestry and Wildlife Office at 917 Fraser Ave., P.O. Box 630661, Lanai City, HI 96763.

The Lanai axis deer season will consist of three hunts:

» The Archery Only Hunt will be held during eight consecutive days, from Feb. 21-28;

» The Muzzle-loading Hunt, March 7 and 14;

» The General Rifle Hunt, during nine consecutive Saturdays, beginning March 21 and ending May 16.

Angel Tree open to needy families

Families who need help getting Christmas gifts for their children or elderly relatives may apply for the Salvation Army's annual Angel Tree Program.

Applications will be accepted Nov. 3-8 at the following Salvation Army locations; call first for available times to apply:

» Honolulu: Kauluwela Mission Corps, 296 N. Vineyard Blvd., 521-6551;

» Kaneohe: Kaneohe Corps, 45-175 Waikalua Road, 235-1408;

» Aiea: Leeward Corps, 98-612 Moanalua Loop, 487-1636.

Applicants must bring photo identification of themselves and their children to verify age, income and address. Eligible families will also receive food for a holiday dinner.

 

HMSA offering flu-shot clinics

The Hawaii Medical Service Association will have eight flu-shot clinics from Saturday through Nov. 21.

Flu shots are free for HMSA, HMSA 65C and HMSA QUEST members age 18 or older, while supplies last. There will be no charge for Medicare Part B beneficiaries who show their membership card and photo identification.

Cost for nonmembers is $40.

The immunizations will be available at the following stores on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island:

» Saturday: Wal-Mart (Kunia) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

» Monday: Wal-Mart (Pearl City) from 4 to 7 p.m.

» Nov. 11: Wal-Mart (Mililani) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

» Nov. 12: Wal-Mart (Lihue) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

» Nov. 13: Wal-Mart (Hilo) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

» Nov. 17: Wal-Mart (Kailua-Kona) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sam's Club (Pearl City) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

» Nov. 21: Wal-Mart (Kahului) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
