Heather Marsh Manuel portrayed Mother Marianne Cope on Saturday during a re-enactment of the Franciscan nun's arrival with six sisters to Honolulu 125 years ago. In 1883, King Kalakaua sent out a request to 50 congregations to help patients suffering from Hansen's disease. The Franciscan sisters of Syracuse, N.Y., were the only ones to respond. The procession made its way down Fort Street Mall to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, where they were greeted by Bishop Larry Silva, a drum performance by 'Ahahui Kaiulani and Halau Hula O Maiki and song. The celebration culminated with a noon mass, luau and music by the Royal Hawaiian Band.

Women from 'Ahahui Kaiulani and Halau Hula O Maiki re-enacted the arrival. Pictured in the foreground was Heather Marsh Manuel as Mother Marianne Cope, with Ipo Kahapea and Bibiana Flazer behind her. Also present but not visible were Bonnie Perry, Noe Perry, Kili Perry and Kristen McAndrews.

Puakeala Mann pounded the pahu. Mann is a member of 'Ahahui Kaiulani and Halau Hula O Maiki. The halau performed the drums in lieu of hula, which historically had been banned by missionaries.
