HOT “OPERA BALL” ELEGANT, EXCELLENT: Executive Director Karen Tiller, standing center, was a gracious hostess as Hawaii Opera Theatre presented Opera Ball 2008, “The Great Escape,” Saturday in the Hawaii Ballroom of the Sheraton Waikiki. HOT supporters enjoyed a full evening of Ocean vodka martinis, a superb dinner, brief previews of next season’s operas and late-evening dancing. Linda Rosehill, left, Suzanne Watanabe, standing left, Bill Gillardy, Mark Polivka, standing right, Marilyn Pappas and Jim Pappas partied with Tiller at her table — conveniently equidistant from the performance stage and the dance floor.
Former Gov. Ben Cayetano and his wife, Vicky, were the most prominent members of Hawaii’s political circles to show their support for HOT.

HOT board member Neva Rego, left, greeted fashion designer Anne Namba, Leslie “Buz” Tennent and Dr. Kanthi de Alwis as they inspected silent-auction items before dinner. Namba’s ensemble included her “Rose Gown” (designed from a Japanese wedding kimono), a chiffon capelet and a pair of $15,000 Anne Meng earrings. De Alwis wore a burgundy silk Sri Lankan sari with gold brocade trim. Tennent entertained the crowd later in the evening with a selection from Bizet’s “Carmen.”

UH-Manoa basketball coach Bob Nash, left, remembered by longtime Hawaii residents as one of the “Fabulous Five” Rainbow basketball team of the early ’70s, chatted with HOT supporters Donna Bebber and Paul Brown.
Hans Strasser, left, consul general of Austria, and Patricia Lee, honorary consul general of France, represented the diplomatic community as they attended the ball with their spouses, Marie Claire Strasser and “Silver Table” sponsor Dr. Worldster Lee. (The elaborate display behind them is the opera’s “Phantom Table”). HOT’s 2009 season — “Escape!” — opens with “Manon Lescaut,” Jan. 30 through Feb. 3, followed by “Abduction from the Seraglio” and “Carmen.” Call 956-7858 or visit www.hawaiiopera.org.
Leilani Keogh was escorted by three well-dressed men -- Eric Chandler, left, Leilani Keogh, HOT “Platinum Table” sponsor Dr. Lawrence K.W. Tseu, and Takeo Kobayashi – as she surveyed the action at the silent auction.
Davis Nguyen joined Opera Ball Silent Auction Chair Jay Chen, left, Opera Ball Co-Chair Josette March and Raine Ah Moo as they modeled their eye-catching gowns near the “Phantom Table” inside the ballroom.
Opera Ball “Bronze Table” sponsor John Michael White enjoyed cocktail hour conversation with Jessica White, left, and Siril Jatten.
Veteran actor Mark Gilbert, left, attending Opera Ball as a representative of “Silver Table” sponsor Commercial Data Systems, caught up with actor/costume designer Dusty Behner and actor/director/playwright Troy Apostol. Apostol said his gold accessories were chosen to compliment Behner’s gown (“It’s all about Dusty,” he said). Behner created the gown in between designing the costumes for Kumu Kahua’s hit production of “Rolling The R’s” and Manoa Valley Theatre’s political drama, “Frost/Nixon,” which opened last night.
Hoku Gilbert told HOT volunteer Chuck Anctil that her black and red cheong sam was so light and comfortable that felt “like a nightgown” as she admired items in the art section of the silent auction. Anctil, whose red fez relates to the Turkish theme of Hoot’s upcoming production of “Abduction From The Seraglio,” said he plans to move to the mainland next month after several decades in Hawaii; the local theater scene will lose a long-time performer and supporter of the arts when he goes.
