"PORTS OF CALL" BOOSTS SYMPHONY: "Concerto table" sponsors Brian Sakamaki, top left, and Donna Walden joined Executive Director Tom Gulick and his wife, Margaret Gulick, ball chairman Rick Blangiardi and Karen Chang in the receiving line for "Ports of Call," the Honolulu Symphony's 12th Annual Symphony Ball, March 21 at the Hawai'i Convention Center. Several hundred symphony supporters turned out in black-tie or "formal ethnic" attire for the popular fundraiser. Proceeds help fund the symphony's community-education programs, neighbor-island performances and mentoring of young musicians.

Vicki Borges, left, and her husband, vocalist Jimmy Borges, joined silent-auction co-chairwoman Uli Cutter, Audrey Yamada and her husband, symphony board member Dr. Gregg Yamada, as they inspected items up for bid. Jimmy was seen later in the evening as the narrator/host of a video documentary showing the symphony's community-education programs in action; he also joined Matt Catingub and the symphony for several numbers when the dancing started after dinner.

Table sponsors Marty Fritz, left, Susie and Rick Fried, and Deena Nichols (representing Macy's) encountered emcee Keahi Tucker of KGMB-TV in another section of the silent-auction area before dinner. The menu featured items with Asian and Mediterranean themes — a Napoleon of lobster, crab and unagi, and an herb-crusted rack of lamb with lamb cannelloni and fig sauce.

The bountiful assortment of silent-auction items also attracted Lisa Nishiyama, left, Jana Walden, Lauren Wright, May Price and Michael Han, GM of the Wedding Ring Shop. Han supported the symphony by donating a one-of-a-kind pendant that was one of the major items in a live auction conducted by "Surfer Joe" Teipel. Walden was delighted to be the high bidder on three "must have" silent-auction items, and said it was probably just as well that she was outbid on some others.

Carolyn Berry was surrounded by dashing men — principal conductor Andreas Delfs, left, Capt. Dave Wilson, Chuck Walthen, Pops conductor Matt Catingub and Glenn Inouye of Servco Hawaii — during a pause in the program. Maestro Delfs took the stage with the full symphony shortly after dinner. Catingub and several guests provided music for dancing later in the evening.
