Joyce Gushiken, left, and Alice Morioka from the Honolulu Fukushima Bon Dance Club led a group of boys from Saint Louis School in a bon dance Wednesday during Japan Day. The Japan-America Society of Hawaii provided four isle high schools with the opportunity to experience Japanese culture at its event sponsored by the McInerny Foundation at Hawaii Tokai International College. Students from Maryknoll School, Maui High School, St. Andrew's Priory and Saint Louis School attended the half-day program, which included bon dance, bonsai, calligraphy, traditional crafts, ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangement), soroban (Japanese abacus), tea ceremony and yukata wearing. The program began with a taiko demonstration by the Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble. Since its inception in 1993, more than 4,500 students from 48 public and private high schools have experienced this educational outreach program.
