Pair robs 69-year-old in his Hawi apartment

Big Island police detectives are investigating an armed robbery of a man at an apartment in Hawi.

A 69-year-old resident was returning home and walking down a hallway when he was held at gunpoint by a man in a dark ski mask, police said yesterday.

The masked man escorted the resident to his apartment where another suspect, wearing a white towel around his head, was searching for valuables, police said.

Police said besides an undisclosed amount of money, the suspects took prescription medication and a replica of a long-barrel revolver during the robbery at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The suspects fled on foot northbound on Akoni Pule Highway.

One of the suspects is described as 30 to 40 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a medium-dark complexion and a stocky build.

The other was 17 to 22 years old, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, with a medium-dark complexion and a thin build.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call 935-3311 or CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 or 320-8181.

Big Island police awaiting autopsy of crash victim

Big Island police are awaiting autopsy results before classifying the death of a 70-year-old Waimea man Saturday after a one-vehicle crash on Kawaihae Road.

The victim was identified as Peter Gusman, who police said may have suffered from a medical condition before the crash.

South Kohala police said Gusman was driving a 1989 Ford F-150 pickup truck at 1:25 p.m. west on Kawaihae Road when he ran off the right side of the road near the 58-mile marker. He was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died at 2:06 p.m.

Police said they do not believe that speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.
