Eighty-five families in Hawaii named their new sons Ethan last year, making it the most popular boy's name in 2008.

Sixty-five girls were named Chloe, and another 17 with alternative Khloe spelling, making it the favorite for girls' names, according to information compiled from Social Security card applications.

Those children join the ranks of hundreds of toddlers who will answer to the same first names in future kindergarten classes. The popular baby names list is pretty much a rerun year after year, with Old Testament boys' names especially popular in Hawaii. Eight of the 10 local favorites in each category also topped the 2007 list.

The expanded list of 100 most popular names, found on the Social Security Administration Web page, is also a repeating pattern of names as likely to be linked to celebrities or television series characters as they are to traditional family names.

The inexplicable trend continued to create boys names rhyming with Aiden -- Jaden, Zayden, Kaden, Braden with variations of spelling. Girls' names ending in "a" are popular. Hawaiian first names were few.

Something new to Hawaii last year was a name that Christian rock singer Sonny Sandoval gave his daughter in 2000. Nevaeh, which is heaven spelled backward, has grown in popularity ever since, taking the No. 34 spot on the U.S. list. In Hawaii, 18 girls were dubbed Nevaeh last year, making it 42nd on the island hit parade.

Just plain Heaven spelled forward did not make the top list, although a few children were dubbed Grace, Angel, Destiny or Serenity.
