Father, sons get prison time on cockfighting counts

A father and two of his sons will each spend more than a year-and-a-half in federal custody for running an illegal cockfighting and gambling operation on family land in Waialua.
A federal jury found Douglas Gilman Sr., Douglas Gilman Jr., and William Gilman guilty of conspiring to operate and operating an illegal gambling business. They are the last defendants sentenced in the case.
Other defendants already sentenced include two former Honolulu police officers who admitted providing warnings of police raids and a former Honolulu police sergeant and his wife who were found guilty of extorting money from the gambling operators.
U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway sentenced William Gilman yesterday to 20 months in prison. She sentenced Douglas Gilman Sr. and Douglas Gilman Jr. last month to two years each in prison.
Gilman Jr. is also facing discharge him from his city job.
Another family member, Charles Gilman, pleaded guilty before trial and testified against his father and brothers. He is serving 170 months in prison for the gambling and drug promotion.
Mollway said she gave Gilman Sr. and Gilman Jr. longer prison sentences because the elder Gilman has prior state gambling convictions and because the son concealed from the court money he earned as a trustee for his grandmother's trust. And she said William Gilman wasn't as closely involved in the gambling operation as his father and brothers.
The FBI discovered the illegal gambling operation through wiretaps of drug dealers who were getting tipped off by a former FBI employee.
