The medical examiner is still investigating why a 33-year-old California man died Monday night when he was restrained after allegedly stealing beer from a Waikiki store.
The Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Humberto Murillo of San Fernando, Calif.
Police classified the case as an unattended death and a robbery.
At about 8:49 p.m., police said, Murillo walked out of the ABC Store at the Diamond Head end of the Hyatt Regency, 2424 Kalakaua Ave., with a couple of cold packs of beer without saying anything. The cashier notified her manager, who found Murillo on the second floor of the hotel and asked him for a receipt, police said.
Witnesses said the men struggled in front of a golf shop as a crowd gathered and the cans of beer rolled across the floor.
Murillo began assaulting the 29-year-old manager, police said.
The manager called for help, and a 20-year-old hotel guest responded by helping to subdue Murillo, police said.
"He just hold him," said a witness who works at a shop in the Hyatt Regency. "He never punched him."
The manager told Murillo he would release him if he would stop resisting, but Murillo allegedly said he would kill him if he got free, police said.
"Suddenly he's unconscious," said the witness, a woman who asked not to be named. "I think he had a heart attack, because suddenly he stopped."
Hotel security officials performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Murillo, who was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Maggie Donaldson, a nearby jewelry store manager who saw the commotion, blamed the alleged robber.
"He is bad guy," she said. "Why he steal something from somebody's store?"
But she added, "I don't expect somebody steal two packs beer and die."
