The Safeway Foundation donated $10,000 to support the Girl Scouts of Hawaii's leadership-development program to preserve the environment, titled, "It's Your Planet, Love It!"

The Monsanto Hawaii Science Education Fund, gave more than $12,000 to the Kauai Island Robotics Team and 13 schools — Baldwin High School, Central Middle School, Iao Intermediate School, Kailua High School, Kaiser High School, King Kekaulike High School, Lahainaluna High School, Maui High School, McKinley High School, Pearl City High School, Roosevelt High School, Waialua High & Intermediate School and Waianae High School. Molokai schools also receive funds as part of this grant program via The Friends of Molokai High & Middle Schools Foundation.

Kaili Lambe of Hilo was named "Student Representative of the Year" July 8 at the 2009 Campus Progress National Conference for young progressives in Washington, D.C. Lambe, a student at Dartmouth University in New Hampshire, led lobbying efforts on environmental issues on the campus and national levels, and promoted feminism with campus groups and through journalism.
