Grisly discovery spurs murder investigation
Big Island police have opened a murder investigation after the body of a man was found Wednesday afternoon in Onomea.
An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death, but police said in a news release that they believe foul play was involved.
The body was found in thick vegetation about 100 feet down a steep gulch, police Capt. Medeiros said. The Fire Department assisted police in recovering the body.
On Saturday police found the pickup truck of a missing 35-year-old Mountain View man on the Onomea Scenic Route. They searched the area at the time and found no trace of Jason Adams, missing since last Friday. Police are not saying whether the two cases are related.

A missing persons investigation on the Big Island is now a murder investigation after police found the body of Jason Adams in Onomea yesterday afternoon, five days after he was reported missing.

Police have identified the body but are not releasing the man's name until next of kin are notified.
Police said an anonymous caller reported hearing gunshots in the area, which prompted a search using dogs.
Anyone with information is asked to call Lt. Mitchell Kanehailua at 961-2252 or the nonemergency police number at 935-3311.
2 Kauai refuse workers caught in acidic cloud
Two Kauai County refuse workers were taken to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital yesterday morning after a small explosion released a white cloud while picking up trash in Eleele early yesterday morning.
The explosion happened as a load of household trash was being compressed.
A Fire Department hazardous materials team and state Department of Health personnel responded to the 4:55 a.m. incident. The substance was found to be acidic and was cleaned up.
