DON'T WANNA MISS A THING: Aerosmith lead singer Stephen Tyler performed last night at Blaisdell Arena. The band is here for two concerts after canceling a Maui concert two years ago that resulted in a class action lawsuit, then recently canceling the remainder of their recent tour due to injuries to Steven Tyler. SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL | Myrissa Kaili enjoyed trying out the "Whole Body Vibration Fitness Machine" as her dad Myron looked on yesterday during the 5th Annual Food and New Products Show at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Behind them, Joshua Pahio used another vibration machine. The show continues today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $3; children 12 and under are free.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH | Alexander "Lex" Brodie blew out candles on his tire-inspired cake yesterday during his 95th birthday party held during KSSK's Perry and Price morning radio show in Jimmy Buffet's at the Waikiki Beachcomber. The party coincided with Lex Brodie's "Thank You Very Much Award" event, which encourages students to write a 300-word essay expressing their gratitude to those who have touched their lives. Brodie is best known as a tire retailer and also has served on the state's Board of Education.
TALL LOAD STRIKES GULICK STREET OVERPASS | Honolulu police officers waited on the Gulick Avenue overpass after a truck carrying a crane that was not fully retracted hit it going eastbound on H-1 freeway about 11 a.m. yesterday. It was the fourth time a tall load on a vehicle has hit and damaged the overpass since last year. State transportation spokeswoman Tammy Mori said the truck is owned by Jensen Precast and that the state will fine the company and would hold the company liable for the damage, which could cost $10,000 or more. Two lanes were closed for about 1 1/2 hours, backing up eastbound traffic. View KITV video
BIRTHDAY FIT FOR A PRINCESS | Larry Pascua, of the Outrigger Ohana East, adjusted leis on a statue of Princess Kaiulani yesterday. Outrigger and Ohana hotels observed Princess Kaiulani's birthday yesterday with a lei-draping ceremony in Waikiki.
MAKING TIME FOR MARITIME DAY | The Piilani tugboat showcased its maneuverability yesterday by performing doughnuts in Honolulu Harbor as part of Maritime Day held by Aloha Tower Marketplace. The event coincided with the U.S. Coast Guard's World Maritime Day to honor the ocean environment and those who work on or use the ocean recreationally. Maritime safety was a focus, along with scheduled demonstrations by the Honolulu Fire Department fire boat crew and the Coast Guard and live performances by the Marine Forces Pacific Band.
GIVING VOICE TO THE SILENCED | Ben Llacuna held a photo of his mother, Patricia Avergonzado, and his sister Marcie Llacuna yesterday during the 15th annual Men's March Against Violence and rally. The women were shot and killed in Village Park in 1995 by Marcie Llacuna's former boyfriend, John Lewis, who also killed himself. Hundreds gathered to remember those who lost their lives to domestic violence and to pass on the message of nonviolence.
ALOHA TO USS RONALD REAGAN: The USS Ronald Reagan docked at Pearl Harbor yesterday. The carrier had been deployed in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean to support troops in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
HULA AT CHURCH HONORS DIVER KILLED BY BOAT: Hundreds filled the New Hope Christian Fellowship church at Sand Island yesterday for a memorial service for Keahihoku Lum. The diver died after being struck by a boat last week in Maunalua Bay. Lum's girlfriend, Emily Callejo, performed a hula in his honor, while his mother, Lehua Lum, inset, greeted visitors while wearing a button with an image of her son.
