Online undercover case nabs man

Authorities yesterday charged a 30-year-old Pearl City man who was arrested Thursday after he showed up at a King Street address allegedly to have sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Ryan K. Kawamoto was charged with first-degree electronic enticement of a child.

Kawamoto was caught when he showed up at an agreed-upon meeting place to have sex with a person he thought was a 14-year-old girl he met on the Internet, police said. The girl was actually a law enforcement officer.

Police arrested him Thursday night at 2575 S. King St. His bail was set at $11,000.

 

Man dies after hit by Waikiki wave

A 78-year-old man died yesterday after he apparently fell backward when he was hit by a wave while sitting on Waikiki Beach smoking a cigar.

Police said the man was sitting at the high-water mark on shore smoking a cigar when a wave broke at 12:40 p.m. on shore. The man appeared to fall backward and was knocked unconscious, police said.

A witness performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man. The man was then taken to Straub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:25 p.m.

The case is pending an autopsy, which is scheduled for Monday.

Puna man charged in kidnap attempt

Police yesterday charged a 22-year-old Puna man who allegedly tried to kidnap a 16-year-old girl in Pahoa.

Dickenson Nakashima was charged with second-degree unlawful imprisonment. Bail was set at $1,000.

A school resource officer received a report Tuesday from Pahoa High School officials that there was an attempted kidnapping of a girl while she was walking to a bus stop in the Tiki Gardens subdivision.

Police were able to determine the suspect's identity and arrested Nakashima at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Big Island police search for man for allegedly choking girlfriend

Big Island police today asked for the public's help in finding a 23-year-old Kailua-Kona who is wanted for allegedly choking his girlfriend.

Police said a 26-year-old woman reported she got into an argument with her boyfriend, Cody Lee Hughes, who allegedly choked her and caused her to pass out.

Hughes is described as 5-feet 10 inches tall, 160 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the police nonemergency number at 935-3311 or CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
