Plea deal is sought in stabbing
LIHUE » A Kauai man accused of stabbing his wife to death is trying to reach a plea agreement with prosecutors.
The second-degree murder trial of 50-year-old Joseph Hoapili Sr. was to have begun Monday.
The start of the trial has been postponed, and Deputy Public Defender John Calma said he is hopeful an agreement can be reached.
Fredlynn Hoapili, 53, was killed in March. She had been stabbed 18 times.
The couple's son told police he saw his father stab his mother.
Joseph Hoapili is being held at the Kauai Community Correctional Center.
Police seek help in assault case
Honolulu police are asking the public's help in finding two men wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in Waialua.
At about 7:48 a.m. Oct. 3, a passing motorist spotted a woman walking on the Joseph P. Leong Highway, disoriented with facial injuries, police said.
The woman reported that she met two men at about 2:40 a.m. in Waikiki and had a few drinks with them. They offered her a ride to another bar but instead drove her to Waialua where she was sexually assaulted, according to police.
The first suspect is described as 19-20 years old, 6 feet tall and 160 pounds. He was wearing a red baseball cap and has a red koi tattoo on his forearm. The second suspect is in his 20s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 160 pounds. He has black hair with a crew cut and a skull tattoo on his forearm.
Anyone with information about the assault or the suspects is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
Missing woman needs medicine
Police are looking for a missing 42-year-old Hilo woman who suffers from a medical condition and requires medication.
Lisa Michelle Kaufman disappeared after she made a court appearance after being charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Kaufman was last seen at Kona District Court wearing a long T-shirt-style dress. She went through court proceedings, then was released, Big Island police Lt. Glenn Uehana said.
Kaufman was last seen at noon Monday.
The main concern police have is that Kaufman could be a danger to herself because she requires medication for a medical condition, he said.
She is 5 feet 2 inches tall, about 180 pounds, with green eyes and brown hair.
Murder-suicide case on Maui
Maui police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide at a Makawao home that left a 59-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman dead of gunshot wounds.
Police are expected to release the identities of the two individuals today after autopsies are performed.
Police responded at 10:15 p.m. Monday to a 911 call of domestic abuse with possible gunshots fired at 310 Iini Way in Makawao.
The Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the case as a murder-suicide, according to a news release from the Maui County Police Department.
