The University of Hawaii at Hilo hired a former Honolulu Police Department deputy chief and former corporate director of security for Outrigger Hotels as director of campus security at UH-Hilo.

Warren J. Ferreira has more than 40 years of law enforcement and security expertise, the university said in a news release.

Security has most recently been a function of contract guard services, and Ferreira's job is a new position, said Allison Kakugawa-Leong, director of media relations for UH-Hilo. He started on Sept. 21.

Kakugawa-Leong said the director of campus security is not considered an executive position, and his salary is confidential.

Ferreira's job is part of the Hawaii Government Employees Association bargaining unit.

The salary range for the job, before the recently approved 5 percent pay cut for Unit 8 members, was between $44,724 and $113,424.
