LAS CRUCES, NM >> Hawaii earned a split of its two-game, 10-day road trip with a 42-30 win over New Mexico State today at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
Hawaii quarterback Greg Alexander completed 26 of 32 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Warriors to their highest point output of the season before a crowd of 10,861.
Running back Daniel Libre rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns as Hawaii (5-5, 4-3 Western Athletic Conference) handed New Mexico State (3-6, 1-4) its fourth straight loss. Kealoha Pilares caught 10 passes for 90 yards and a score in his return from a foot injury.
New Mexico State stunned the Warriors with an 84-yard touchdown strike from Chase Holbrook to Chris Williams on the game’s second play from scrimmage.
But Hawaii scored on its first four drives and on a 91-yard interception return by Ryan Mouton to take a 35-17 lead into halftime.
Alexander passed for 148 yards and two touchdowns before the break, a 17-yarder to Aaron Bain and a 6-yarder to Kealoha Pilares. Alexander also scored on a quarterback sneak. Libre also had a 4-yard touchdown run in the first-half barrage and added a 3-yard scoring run in the third quarter.
Holbrook threw for 394 yards and four touchdowns, three going to Williams, who finished with 221 yards.
