Pete Newell, the Hall of Fame basketball coach who won an NCAA championship and Olympic Gold medal and later tutored some of the game's greatest big men at his camp in Hawaii, died Monday of natural causes in Rancho Santa Fe. He was 93.
Until recent years he was an annual presence in Hawaii, hosting the "Big Man" and "Tall Woman" camps, considered a right of passage for pro centers. The camps have been held in Las Vegas most recently.
He had many friends in the islands, including former Chaminade coach Merv Lopes who worked the camps with him.
He led Cal to the 1959 national championship and is considered by many — including luminaries such as Bobby Knight and Jerry West — one of the game's most influential coaches.
