Hawaii is celebrating the 50th anniversary since the bill was signed that allowed it to become the 50th state.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the measure into law on March 18, 1959, clearing the way for a vote of Hawaii residents in June and Hawaii’s admission into the nation Aug. 21.
Not everyone joined in the festivities this morning at the Hawaii Capitol, which included musical performances and speeches from the state’s elected leaders.
Hawaiian sovereignty groups protested statehood because they believe it to be an illegal result of the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893.
Organizers of the official celebrations say Hawaii symbolizes the nation’s diversity.
