Before a boisterous crowd that packed the front of the state Capitol atrium today, Gov. Linda Lingle vetoed three tax bills that she says would further harm the economy and lead to further job losses.
The governor signed all three vetoes amid chants of “Veto! Veto!”
Public safety officials estimated the crowd at about 400 people.
The bills propose a 28 percent increase in hotel room tax, an increase in personal income taxes on individuals earning more than $150,000 and couples making more than $300,000 and higher taxes for real estate sales over $2 million
Majority Democrats in the Legislature say the bills are critical to balance the state’s $10 billion biennium budget and they believe they have the votes to override all three measures.
