The Kauai Fire Department rescued the brother of former Kauai Councilwoman and Mayor JoAnn Yukimura in Wailua yesterday morning after he had been in the wild since Sunday, a county news release said.
The 55-year-old man, visiting from Oahu, was found above a waterfall below the Powerline Trail in Wailua.
The man left Sunday and planned to hike to Hanalei Valley. It normally takes the man a day to complete the hike, the news release said. But the man took a short cut and ended up in a precarious spot and decided to stay put.
JoAnn Yukimura reported him missing yesterday and the fire department launched an air and ground search. The search resumed at about 8 this morning and the man was located.
The county withheld the man's first name, at his request.
Yukimura issued a statement thanking rescuers. "My family and I are so very grateful to the Kauai Fire Department and Kauai Police Department. Ken D'Attilio and Inter-island Helicopters, Chris Kim and Jack Hrter Helicopters, Kauai Search and Rescue, DNLR, the Marvin Masada family and the many individuals who helped rescue my brother," Yukimura said.
"Until a family member or close friend is involved, one doesn't realize what rescue personnel go through to save a life and re-unite families. We were deeply moved by the dedication, skill and compassion of all who helped."
