Marine Corps officials said Bellows Beach will be closed to the public for June because of “persistent unsafe and environmentally destructive activities happening on the beach and in the camping areas.”

A news release from Marine Corps Training Area Bellows said the activities include drug use, fights, large camp fires, trash dumping, off-roading on the beach, alcohol use and vehicle break-ins.

Officials said the goal is for Bellows Beach to be publicly accessible for the July 4th weekend.

The Marines’ portion of Bellows Beach is usually open to the public on weekends. The Air Force side of the Windward Oahu military installation will remain open.

“Marine Corps Base Hawaii is working closely with the U.S. Air Force, city officials, and the local communities to ensure Bellows Beach is maintained as a safe environment,” the release said.
