Shawna-Lei Kuehu, one of the most acclaimed high school basketball players in Hawaii state history, has signed a scholarship agreement with Hawaii for the 2009-10 season.
“I am pleased to have Shawna join the Rainbow Wahine basketball ohana,” first-year head coach Dana Takahara-Dias said in a release today.
Kuehu had originally signed with Cal last year, but told the Star-Bulletin in February she planned on enrolling and playing basketball at UH.
In her first move since being hired May 28, Takahara-Dias signed one of the most highly recruited basketball players coming out of high school in Hawaii.
“It feels good to sign with UH,” Kuehu said. “I’m excited to get back on the court. I’m also happy to be Coach Dana’s first recruit.”
“It was great coaching her with Team Aloha and to add a player like Shawna, shows our commitment to recruit locally,” Takahara-Dias said.
Kuehu won three state titles at Punahou, including her freshman and sophomore season and in her senior year. She was named the State Player of the Year her sophomore and senior seasons and was first team All-State her freshman year.
In the state championship game her sophomore season, she scored a record 37 points in a spectacular performance leading to the state title. Her senior year, she scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the state title victory.
