Another 100 people in Hawaii have tested positive for the swine flu virus within the last week, according to the state health department.

The department reported on its Web site today that 98 of the cases were on Oahu, one on Maui and one on Kauai. The state total is 298.

To date, state health officials have tested 1,350 people for the H1N1 influenza A virus. Tests are done on 60-120 specimens per work day, according to health officials. Of those who have tested positive for Influenza A, 40-45 percent are swine flu, 5-10 percent are seasonal H1 influenza and 40-45 percent are seasonal H3 influenza, health officials said.

The breakdown by island of those testing positive for swine flu since the first cases were reported on May 5 are:
Oahu, 288; Big Island, 4; Kauai 3, and Maui 3.

The Health Department points out that one of the Maui cases was a Maui resident who contracted the disease while traveling in another state, was briefly hospitalized and recovered before returning to Maui.

Health officials have not reported any hospitalizations of swine flu patients in Hawaii.
The Health Department asks anyone to call a doctor if they have a fever higher than 100 degrees and a sore throat or cough.

People are advised to stay home if they are sick to avoid spreading the virus. Home care guidelines for the flu are on the department Web site at www.hawaii.gov/health.

Information on H1N1 influenza is available by calling Aloha United Way’s 211, which has interpretation and TDD/TTY services.

Health officials stress good hygiene to avoid flu viruses -- washing hands, covering a cough or sneeze and not touching your face, eyes, nose and mouth.
