A 21-year-old Hanapepe man died early today in a single-car crash in Koloa, Kauai, according to a Kauai County news release.

The victim was identified as Brian Pacheco.

Police said Pacheco was southbound on Koloa Road near Omao Road about 1:14 a.m. when his vehicle crossed the centerline, hit an embankment and a utility pole on the opposite shoulder and bounced back onto the highway on its side.

Pacheco was taken to Wilcox Hospital where he died, the release said.

Police are investigating whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. Officials said Pacheco was not wearing a seatbelt.

This is the third traffic fatality on Kauai this year.
