An 18-year-old Maui man died Friday at Maui Memorial Medical Center of injuries he suffered earlier last week when the truck he was driving hit a guard rail on Hana Highway in Haiku and landed in a gulch, police said today.
Kepa Kahakauwila was driving a blue pickup truck at 5:30 p.m. Thursday that was heading west on Hana Highway near Holokai Road when it veered right and collided into a guardrail, overturned and landed in a gulch, police said.
One of the passengers was treated at a hospital and released on Monday. The other was flown to Oahu for medical treatment.
The traffic death was the eighth so far this year on Maui County roads, compared with 11 fatalities at the same time last year.
