Kono, Kim advance in U.S. Public Links play

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono defeated Emily Powers of Illinois 4 and 3 today in the first round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links golf championship in Devens, Mass.

Kono, the top seed, faces Tiffany Lua of California in tomorrow's second round at Red Tail Golf Club. Kono recently finished her freshman year at UCLA while Lua is an incoming freshman at UCLA. 

Former Hilo resident Kimberly Kim also advanced when toping Mallory Fraiche of Louisiana 3 and 1. 

Losing their matches today from Hawaii were Mari Chun, Kristina Merkle and Miki Ueoka.
